RIP Bernie Mac, 1957-2008

August 9th, 2008 | San Francisco Comedy

The great Bernie Mac has passed away at age 50 from complications related to pneumonia.

Chris Rock: “Bernie Mac was one of the best and funniest comedians to ever live but that was the second best thing he did. Bernie was one of the greatest friends a person could have. Losing him is like losing 12 people because he absolutely filled up any room he was in. I’m gonna miss the Mac Man.”

My Audition For Last Comic Standing, by Will Franken

August 1st, 2008 | San Francisco Comedy

by William Franken

I was really excited when I got the e-mail from NBC that said they wanted me to audition for Last Comic Standing. I was very excited. And happy about it, too.

That was what I needed for my comedy career! A chance to be on a television show and do my jokes for an audience of crowd.

The night before I received the e-mail, I was sleeping. In the morning, when I checked my e-mail, the e-mail said:

“Dear Mr. Franken, we would like you to audition for Last Comic Standing because your comedy speaks directly to the human condition. Our show is about the metaphysics of comedy and whether or not comedy can serve as its own epistemology. At Last Comic Standing, we are looking to elevate discourse about comedy in relation to truth, both internal and external. Signed, NBC.”

I was so excited! This was my ONE BIG CHANCE! There was never going to be ANOTHER CHANCE at all! ALL MY CAREER rested on this one CHANCE!

A CHANCE I COULD BELIEVE IN!!!!

Tonight: Jimmy Dore’s “Citizen Jimmy” on Comedy Central

August 1st, 2008 | San Francisco Comedy

Tonight at 11pm, Comedy Central will air “Citizen Jimmy,” Jimmy Dore’s new 1 hour special taped live at The Fillmore in San Francisco.

Here is a short excerpt from our interview with Jimmy back in April. Click here to read the whole thing.

SF Why did you choose to film your new Comedy Central special in San Francisco?

Jimmy Dore: It’s a great city for comedy, it’s just a fun town. My show has gotten more political, kind of a Jon Stewart Daily Show sensibility. I like to talk about the crazy state of our government and world. I don’t know how people don’t talk about it. And that just seemed like the perfect place to do it.
