Announcing: The Bay Area Laugh Leader competition!

Beginning July 1st, 84 comedians will compete over 10 weeks at the historic Purple Onion. The championship round will be held on September 2nd, and one winner will be crowned the SFstandup.com Bay Area Laugh Leader (B.A.L.L.). Scoring will be based on a combination of audience vote and judges’ vote.

If we don’t know you, please let us know your comedy background and if possible, include a link to your website or performance clips. We will still consider you if you don’t have any experience, but most of the people that will be in the competition have been performing stand-up for at least 2-3 years.

If you are looking to try stand-up for the first time, there are some open mikes listed on this page.

First round shows (5 minute sets):
July 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
August 5, 12

Semi-finals (7 minute sets):
August 19, August 26

Finals (10 minute sets):
September 2

The prizes include cash ($300 for 1st, $200 for 2nd, $100 for 3rd), stage time at top Bay Area comedy clubs, radio appearances, and more.

About The Purple Onion:
The Purple Onion is one of the most historic comedy venues in America, and has frequently been voted the Best Comedy Club in San Francisco. The Smothers Brothers recorded their ground-breaking debut album there in 1961, and Zach Galifianakis filmed his popular dvd there in 2005. Phyllis Diller began her career at the Purple Onion, and other past performers include legends such as Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, and Woody Allen.
