5 Questions with Mo Mandel
September 13th, 2007 | Interviews, San Francisco Comedyby Chad Lehrman

San Francisco comedian Mo Mandel really really wants your vote. After a recent appearance on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and a 1st place finish in the San Jose Improv comedy competition, Mo is currently one of 3 finalists in Comedy Central’s Open Mic Fight. Go to comedycentral.com/openmicfight to watch clips of all 3 finalists and cast your vote.
At what point will you stop doing comedy competitions and give other comics a chance?
Good question, and the answer is I will stop doing them when my career actually generates money and not just free drinks and nachos. So in other words, I’ll probably stop doing comedy competitions in nine years.
What do your parents think of all your jokes about them?
They hate me, but not cause of the jokes.
Has anybody ever told you that your impression of your father sounds a lot like Regis Philbin?
Has anyone ever told you that you look like a penis face?
How much did studying creative writing in college help to prepare you for writing jokes?
A lot, cause when I write a joke it’s not just what’s on the paper, there’s so much more meaning and deep messages in there, like that “Chainsaw Pussy” joke, just pure poetry- you know what I mean penis face? [Ok, I was willing to forget being called “penis face” once… but twice? Click here to see the REAL penis face]
What do you think it would take for top comics to be able to remain in San Francisco, and not have to move to L.A. or New York?
The Brainwash [open mike] every night of the week. PLEASE VOTE EVERY DAY UNTIL THE 27TH… the truth is what is good for one Bay Area comic is good for all of them- it gets the industry looking up here for talent.
